I really feel the reason cults (or fringe religions) are successful at entrapping people is that main stream churches do such a poor job at nourishing and attending to their individual members spiritual growth. Not to mention the very little effort put into ministry outreach.

Many people are hungering for answers or are looking for a deeper spiritual experience. These same people may even go to church every Sunday, but find the experience superficial or hollow. Whatever it is, they aren’t finding the answers in those pews.

Those who do not have a good grasp on the Word are fair game for groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses, LDS, COG, etc. Because these groups are out there day after day with their message.

I can tell you that, after finally drumming up the nerve to attend “church” again after my previous experience with being a Jehovah’s Witness — a personal guiding hand to help me understand, to answer questions would have made a world of difference. Instead, the couple of deeper questions I summed up the bravery to ask were either brushed off or met with “I don’t knows” by a local pastor. As it is, at this moment, I am mainly stuck with my own research  into finding the spiritual sustainance I am hungry for. I will continue to search.

I will say, on the plus side, most do an excellent job at reaching out to their communities physical needs — something that is indeed commanded of us. I wonder though if they took it a step farther — if they mixed spreading the gospel in with these type of outreach missions. Maybe too, if they provided their flock with opportunities for in-depth bible studies or took an honest effort to check in with their individual members “spiritual” growth. Would cults have a chance then? When they knocked on a church members door…that member would be armed with an arsenal of knowledge and be able to provide a solid reason for their belief. That member might even be able to do some reverse witnessing.

I would be interested to hear how others feel their churches are doing in this area.

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, – 1 Peter 3:15

The meaning of a recent post I made on Facebook – really with an innocent intention on my part – was quickly misinterpreted by some of my friends.   After a sleepless night and some prayer, I had to step back and realize why this might have happened to me.  Has the stand I’ve been taking on a certain moral issue been done with reverence and gentleness?   In all honesty, probably not as much as it should have.  I have let my zeal for truth and the witnessing of the past abuse of those close to me – unchain my lips from my brain.

I wondered if I am doing the same here in my blog.  Past hurts of my experience growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness should not color my desire to help others who might be struggling to break from this organization or my desire to help bring the truth of Christ to them.    If my desire is to really speak truth and reach out – it should be done as Christ did – with firmness and in love.

I pray then David’s prayer while I remove the preverbal foot out of my mouth. (Hopefully, I can stop banging my head against the wall.)

3. Set a guard over my mouth, LORD;
keep watch over the door of my lips.
4 Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil
so that I take part in wicked deeds
along with those who are evildoers;
do not let me eat their delicacies.

Psalm 141:3-4
